Crumbl Cookie’s only started in 2017, but as a baked goods franchise, is now the largest cookie chain globally and one of the largest baked good stores also.

Crumbl Cookie’s has a long time before surpassing Dunkin Donuts, but is on path to surpass Krispy Kreme in under five years.

Big thing this reminds me of is Crumbs Bakery, which launched in 2003, expanded heavily in the late 2000s/early 2010s and had 58 very large locations in large cities like NYC.

The Strategy Difference



Difference with Crumbl Cookie and Crumbs seems to be strategy, where it’s reported Crumbl Cookies average franchise owners $250-600,000 in cost to get started. Crumbs catered to a more premium market, where the NYC locations cost several million.

Also, Crumbl Cookies has now hit an entirely different league over Crumbs, so it’s interesting in what they are doing.



The company thanked social media for the success, where they have over 3 million Instagram followers and 6.2 million TikTok followers.

Before the pandemic, Crumbl had under 100 locations, which was undeniably impressive for a venture under three years old.

During COVID though, commercial rents in most of the US went down, with the term “retailpocalypse” becoming popular. It was also a terrible time for bakeries, which had a huge spike in bankruptcies, losing all B2B business and walk in traffic.



Crumbl Cookies gained over 200 locations during the pandemic, which seems to be a product partially related to reduced rents and easy access to good commercial space.



The other factor which is a mix of COVID and social media is it’s reported the most common job title for franchise owners is former bakery owners. Many bakeries have converted into Crumbl Cookie’s, getting deals on the franchise itself and taking advantage of the branding.

Other Demand In The Sector


there was always a demand for cookies like this, but just no one did a good job franchising.

Insomnia Cookies, which are extremely popular in NYC launched in 2003, originally did franchises, but stopped and now has plateaued on growth at 215 locations.

Levain Bakery is probably the most popular NYC bakery, holding a social media brand comparable, if not better in reviews than Crumbl Cookies. They’ve had over 5,000 people reach out to them inquiring about franchises, but have refused and stick to just five NYC stores.



Crumbs Bakery also to my knowledge wasn’t a franchise, also focusing mainly on cupcakes, where it seems like cookies are more universally popular.

This is a fast overview on Crumbl, but it looks like they are hitting over 1,000 locations in the next year.
